Splendid Uxbridge

One day in August, Frank and I were feeling a bit bored.

benny bored
Not all mopey bored like Benny seemed to be in this pic, but we had itchy feet and decided to take a day trip to the nearby town of Uxbridge.

uxbridge view
It's a lovely little town. We soon parked and began exploring.

splendid men
No matter the time or place, we all feel the same way about our splendid millitary men and women.

Uxbridge train
The Uxbridge train  runs 90 minute round trip excursions to and from the town of Stouffville. They have special themes trips for Halloween, Christmas, Armed Forces Day, or just to experience the autumn colours through the windows of their vintage trains.

 uxbridge roxy
On our way to the pub for lunch, I got a kick out of seeing this wonderful, old Roxy theatre.

restaurant

seats
From our booth at the pub, this perspective from the bar caught my eye.

purple

bloom
Another eye-catcher, these pretty purple blooms seen while out for a stroll by the waterfront.

uxbridge

bullrushes
Bullrushes were swaying gently along the shoreline.

uxbridge

hut
This sheltered picnic area offered a nice view of the pond.

parasol wreath
Heading back toward the car, we passed a store window where this parasol wreath made a colourful subject.

Benny relaxed
Back home again, Benny's boredom took full hold. I believe he was napping the whole time.

What a fun day for you! I love that sheltered picnic area photo. The water beyond is alight with promises and adventure. Did you go for a swim? LOL!
Nice shots of the purple flowers and I also like the bullrushes and long grasses.

Did you get on that train? It sounds like a great way to spend a day.

Are you sure Benny was napping the whole time? LOL!

OH, how I'd love to take that train ride. What lovely country you live in. I love the purple flower! Benny looks like he's just waiting for you to rub his tummy! I have three that get in that same position!

smiles....cool town...love that pub shot as well....and to ride a train would def be cool...we rode on in PA once...

A great idea to take a trip to Uxbridge ~ with us and a camera in tow. I was wondering if the old buildings in that sign are still standing and if a similar shot could be taken nowadays of the same street? Your photos share lovely portions of your day...and I think Benny has the right idea when home is so cozy!

I love Benny. He knows how to appreciate life! :-)

The bar stools, lined up and at attention, ready for duty...

Benny didn't know what he was missing.

Unlike Benny, I am utterly charmed by this little town and had a lovely virtual day out with you. Thanks for asking us along. I just wish Benny had left a little more room on the back seat.

Lynne with an e said...

Oh wait a minute...you didn't leave him home did you? If so, I don't know quite what was snuggled up to me in the back. A follicle of my hairy imagination, perhaps?

Uxbridge looks like a pleasant place to spend time, and exercise a camera.

I'd agree with you that Uxbridge is a pretty town. Nice variety of photos to show off the town.

Now that is a cute little town! I don't suppose you were househunting...

The most amazing thing about this post is that there are two pictures of Benny...not moving. I love how his hair still looks like it's in motion, though.

That view of the lake through the picnic shelter is wonderful!

You mean you didn't take Benny with you?!

Love the old Roxy Theater! And the padded bar stools. And the lake pics. What a wonderful little town. :)

A beautiful town....Good weather and good pictures thanks!

Hilary, interesting tour around the Uxbridge. I love the photos, most of pub chairs! If your Benny was tired so the tour was full of impressions.

Sometimes I think our cats want us to go out so they can nap in peace. Benny felt the same way perhaps!

I love your pictures. It would have been all I could do to not take the wreath home. I would also want to have stayed at the picnic shelter for a year or two.

Great photos as always. Poor Benny...maybe he needs a girlfriend?

Ohhhhh! So pretty, and such a train station! H., I blogged it, of course, but I was in Jordan, Ont and Hamilton last week, visiting CA friends and wineries on a gorgeous and colorful day! Niagara Falls too!

NitWit1 said...

I loved the train station especially but of course the dog's unabashed relaxation reminds me of my Luckie who is now 12. However, she can still dance and prance when it is her mealtime. Although altered female, she is like a male whose heart often resides in her stomach.

I have photographed the sites of Uxbridge before but your photos have showed me a new way of looking at it. You have good eyes.

Shammickite said...

Uxbridge is just around the corner from me.... well, a couple of corners actually.... so next time make sure you drop in and I'll show you the sights of Sunny Stouffville. Maybe you can get here on the train! Oh no, it stops running for the winter.

Hilary, What a quaint little town you discovered. It looks like a place where time stood still and held the modern world at bay. I really love the sheltered picnic table by the water.

Love the pics of Benny. We all have our own ways of fighting the boredom.

Themed rail trips? How wonderful! Benny didn't think this trip was necessary, did he?

look like a fun day.

Wonderful shots of a great little town. It's interesting that both in the British Isles and the U.S. the old theaters were all called the Roxy. Good luck on your house hunt.

When I lived in Toronto, I heard about "the flesh pots of Uxbridge." Did you see any of those?

Delightful pictures, btw.

A great place to explore. What a neat looking train station.
Benny is too funny!

Thanks for sharing your day out in Uxbridge Hilary. We used to have a picture theatre called the Roxy once too, but it has gone now - Dave

Great view of the bar stools in the pub all lined up and the hooks on the bar in front of each stool. Looks like a great town to browse and get some photos and a little lunch. Glad you and Frank had a nice day.

The convenient hooks on which Cloudia remarked . . . look like health hazards to me. I manage to hurt myself on things like that. Don't ask me how. I couldn't tell you. But I know I'd hurt myself on them somehow.

It does look like a pleasant little town. I wonder how it stays "alive" economically.

Benny is the picture of comfy

Hilary: You and Frank manage to do cool things, and Benny has such a personality for humor, lounging, then "get up and go"! A rare moment! :)

What a charming town! Those are so fun to discover and explore. I love the pic of the bar stools. You can see the cracks in the seats and I wonder how many have sat there and had deep discussions about life while enjoying some refreshment!

I wonder what Benny was dreaming about while you were away! What a posture. The canine spine is a marvelous thing.

Your day trip really has my curiosity piqued. Your country is an amazing place.

Sounds like a nice momentary pause to freshly take in some things that have been around a long time.

Crabby McSlacker said...

Loved the Uxbridge tour! Had that been my camera it would not have looked like such a charming adventure.

But curse you for that lovely cozy bar shot, makes me want to order up a pint at seven in the morning... never a good thing. :)

A lovely day out, the pub, (I don't go there anymore, it's too expensive). And, not too mention Benny, he is precious.
